Review: Malayalam Movie Pazhassi Raja

One of the Most Expected malayalam movie of the 2009 has arrived after a long wait. Yes Mammootty Starrer Pazhassi Raja released all over india on last friday (16/10/2009). I need to tell all of you that the movie Pazhassi Raja is simply Excellent. Here is the detailed review of the movie Pazhassi Raja.

Pazhassi Raja is a movie telling the story all about a prince and his freedom struggles agains the British Force in Kerala - The prince was Pazhassi Kerala Varma. This is the biggest ever produced movie in Malayalam on a budget of 27 crores. Sources indicate that the movie got a good response and has got initial collection of about 1.52 crores in kerala. Hariharan, MT Vasudevan Nair and Mammootty’s exhilarating epic Pazhassi Raja is a monumental film, a movie that goes beyond the message.

The Movie Pazhassi Raja Starts with the dialogues of Superstar Mohanlal who is introducing the Pazhassi Raja. Pazhassi Raja Movie begins during the time when the British had ordered to levy heavy taxes from the various kingdoms and Pazhassi Raja (Mammootty), who belonged to the Kottayam Royal family in Thalassery of Malabar region in Kerala, opposed this. After being forced to flee with his Queen Kaitheri Makkom(Kaniha), Lieutenant Edachena Kunkan (Sarathkumar) and Kaitheri Ambu (Suresh Krishna) to the forests, Pazhassi Raja started guerilla warfare against the British from the forests in Wayanad. He had the support of the tribal warriors like Thalackal Chanthu (Manoj K Jayan) and Neeli(Padmapriya).

After some initial successes, Pazhassi's army soon started facing setbacks as they found the going tough against the guns and modern machinery of the English soldiers. The brave Raja and his faithful gang of warriors were defeated by the army led by the young British sub-collector Thomas Baber, with the help of some traitors like Pazhayamveedan Chanthu(Suman).

Coming to the performances, Mammootty has given a restrained performance as the graceful raaja, but his screen presence and body language is s enough to carry the heavy character with ease. The surprise packet is Sarath Kumar, who looks perfectly fit, heroic and absolutely invincible as Edachena Kunkan. Kaniha looks beautiful even without any make-up or jewellery and has the royal look that is required for her role as Kaitheri Makkom. Manoj K Jayan and Suresh Krishna, along with Padmapriya and Kaniha, make the movie a treasure of performance with exhilarating performances.

You can feel the mighty power of Pazhassi Raja and his bravery through the climax dialogue by the British sub-collector Thomas Baber - "HE WAS OUR ENEMY, BUT HE WAS A GREAT MAN ,A GREAT WARRIOR."

Hariharan and MT Vasudevan Nair have proved their brilliance when they team up several times before and once again, they underline their eminence, with a genuine effort. The technical aspects like Ramanath Shetty's cinematography, Ravi Dewan's action, Resul Pookkutty's sound and Sreekar Prasad's editing have also succeeded in taking to a different level.

Overall, Pazhassi Raaja remains as a great movie with brilliant direction, solid performances spectacular visuals. I prefer you all to watch the movie in theatres and surely it will be worthy.

Verdict : Excellent(4.0/5.0)
